About International Corporate Banking 

International Corporate Banking (ICB)is responsible for the origination of Corporate Banking Products and the relationship management of large multinational and financial institutions clients globally.  The group works closely with its colleagues in the Investment Bank to ensure we are leveraging the breadth of the CIB product set against these client relationships. The team covers clients across the full ICB client segments, with origination activities focused across Asia Pacific and the Middle East (APAC ME).

Overall purpose of role

To lead, manage and oversee the performance of the Corporate Banking Greater China business:

  • Act as a member of the International Corporate Banking APAC ME Leadership team
  • Lead the sustainable performance, growth and future strategy for the Corporate Bank in Greater China region, across the relevant markets, segments and sectors
  • Focus on customers’ needs from an outbound and inbound perspective, enabling support to our International Corporate Banking strategy
  • Be the key client specialist for largest CIB clients, multinational corporations, financial institutions and non-bank financial institutions – working closely with Investment Banking, the ICB Region and Segment heads to help develop relationships with top tier names, ensuring that a high degree of client contact is consistently maintained
  • Accountability for the delivery of the financial and operating performance of the business, including profits, client satisfaction, conduct, controls, employee engagement and community relations

Key Accountabilities

The role holder is responsible for leading, developing and delivering the strategy for the Corporate Bank in Greater China in line with the ICB Regional and Global plans, as well as managing end to end the risk & control agenda, specifically:

  • Developing sustainable strategy and execution plans in conjunction with Regional Head of Corporate Bank for APAC ME and Segment heads
  • Provide proactive, strategic relationship management for an established portfolio of sophisticated Corporate, FI and NBFI clients in Greater China, as well as drive the development and growth of new opportunities for the franchise
  • Develop coverage plans for top tier names from a CIB perspective, ensuring active Investment Banking connectivity
  • Management of risks in line with business appetite, governance and escalation frameworks and process for example credit and financial crime risk
  • Recruitment and development of talent
  • Proactive and effective stakeholder management (ICB and FIG global teams, IB, Product, Risk and other relevant partners)
  • Developing a positive external profile for the Corporate Banking Greater China team and raising awareness of regional potential and capabilities 
  • Attending key risk & controls governance forums: Regional APAC Risk & Controls Forum, Local HK Risk & Controls Forums, Regional and in-country Credit Forums

Stakeholder Management and Leadership

Build effective and active engagement with internal and external stakeholders

  • Proactively build positive relationships with senior leaders and business partners across the Group and with key contacts in external markets
  • Key internal stakeholders include: ICB leadership team, Transaction Banking Leadership team, as well as Heads of Product within Transaction Banking, Senior Investment Banking across the region, Cards and Payments leadership; and relevant COO & Functions teams such as risk, compliance, servicing, operations
  • Key external stakeholders include customer C-suite across Corporates & FIs sectors and countries and media
  • Lead and inspire the team in order to build a high performance sales, customer, values culture across the region

Decision-making and Problem Solving

As a member of the Corporate Banking APAC ME Leadership team, support Head of CB APAC ME with the following:

  • Own, manage and deliver business objectives (revenue, cost and broader KPI’s)
  • Contribute fully in all key commercial decision making and play a role in achieving the control of costs across Barclays
  • Identify and present growth opportunities to the Head of CB APAC ME – as well execute and deliver the aspirational growth of the franchise
  • Contribute to the regional ICB financial planning processes (STP, MTP and RAF), aligning financial targets with business strategy and commercial goals and develop options / recommendations to help the business achieve its overall targets

Risk and Control Objective

Ensure that all activities, duties and decisions are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF), Conduct Risk Management Framework (CRMF) and internal Barclays Policies and Policy Standards and The Barclays Way:

  • Responsible for embedding a clearly articulated risk culture in the Corporate Banking within Greater China and wider APAC ME which reflects Barclays Purpose and Values.
  • Responsibility for maintaining the risk / reward balance of the regional team portfolio, within risk policy guidelines

Person Specification

  • 10+ years’ experience with Corporations, Banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions, dealing with Transaction Banking products and services.
  • Experience/exposure to Investment Banking product set and proven track record of delivering Corporate & Investment Banking solutions to target client set
  • Successful leadership and management of teams, including direct reports, partners, and key stakeholders across geographically dispersed area
  • Relationship management (internal /external) at a senior level
  • Management and implementation of significant cultural and business change, successfully maximising benefit realisation and mitigating potential impacts upon customers, staff and the business
  • Detailed knowledge of the full range of business disciplines e.g. Sales, Sales Management, Marketing, IT, Finance, HR, Risk
  • Full understanding of economic, market and customer trends and developments
  • Strong knowledge/understanding of technical developments e.g. e-commerce, social media, business innovation

Regulated Role

This role will require the role holder to hold mandatory registrations with:

  • The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA)
