In Risk Barclays develops, recommends, and implements controls and cost-effective approaches to minimise Barclay's risks, identifies and analyses potential sources of loss to minimise risk and estimate the potential financial consequences of an occurring loss.

Overall purpose of role

  • As part of the Mumbai Market Risk Management team, the role will cover the portfolio team and be part of the global transformation team in Market Risk. 
  • The Portfolio team work closely with global team in providing an aggregated view of stress, risk sensitivities, senior management information as well as regulatory reporting.
  • The transformation team is looking at how to evolve the market risk function given new strategic systems and regulatory updates. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Support strategic change in infrastructure
  • Help design target operating model for market risk given the transition market risk is going through from both changes internally and externally.
  • Interact with key stakeholders primarily within Market Risk team but also across IT, PC, and senior management. 
  • Execute Stewardship across market risk processes, making both incremental as well as strategic improvements. 
  • Mentor the more junior members of the team. 

Person Specification

  • Strong relationship skills required: ability to credibly act on behalf of, and represent, Market Risk when facing senior peers on teams such as the IT, PC, FO and other senior peers in the respective control functions.
  • Candidate that already has such existing, established, relationships is a real plus.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong project management skills required. 
  • General product and market knowledge as well as knowledge around VaR/FRTB models required. 
  • History of managing a team across different locations. 

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Barclays specific market risk and systems experience is a very strong plus. 
  • Strong experience in a technology/analytics/process function a plus. 
  • Applied math knowledge, with an ability to understand and employ quantitative or statistical analysis is a plus. 

Purpose of the role

To set the risk appetite setting for the Trading portfolio and active calibration & monitoring of limits

Accountabilities

  • Collection and analysis of market data from various sources and ensuring risk is correctly captured, modelled and capitalised.
  • Escalation of critical risk issues or breaches to Traders and senior Risk Management Leadership teams for timely action, as may be required.
  • Review and provision of feedback on market risk models including change governance.
  • Internal, Regulatory and Scenario stress testing for the Trading portfolio, as required.
  • Steer and execution projects of market risk wide-significance e.g. FRTB, One Risk, as required.

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
