What is it like as an Investment Bank Associate at Barclays?
There’s really no typical day in Investment Banking. The best thing about the industry is that while the method to solving an issue may be the same, the approach is often vastly different from company to company – making for variable experiences each day.
What I personally enjoy most is solving strategic problems for clients, and seeing first-hand how the decisions we make influence the sustainability, growth and financial health of the companies we work with. It gives me a sense of pride knowing that what we do serves as a catalyst for our economy.

So far, a stand-out moment for me was putting together the pitch materials for an IPO “bake-off” (which essentially means pitching for new business). I had to craft the story around the investment merits of the company, potential risks, and which attributes of the company would allow them to overcome those risks. The complexity, rapid pace and multi-group collaboration made the deal both challenging and exciting.
I’m thoroughly supported here: people go above and beyond to be as helpful as they can be, from senior leaders sharing their experiences to my peers assisting me on a project. In fact, Barclays has a culture of inspiring one another, at every level of the business.
It’s true that this is a challenging career. You’ve got to hit the ground running, but with that comes early and frequent opportunities for deal execution. It’s all certainly helped with my professional growth, and I know it’ll play a big part in my future success.
