UK Government’s Veterans' Strategy Action Plan

The updated UK Government’s Veterans' Strategy Action Plan aims to ‘Make the UK the best place in the world to be a veteran’ and focuses on housing, mental health support and employment of ex-military people. It also aims to get more veterans into teaching, the uniformed services and the prison service.

To mark the launch of the plan, the Minister for Defence, People and Veterans, Leo Docherty, spoke with colleagues that have been supported through Barclays Military and Veterans Outreach programme.

Reflecting on the conversation, Minister Docherty said: “I was delighted to hear from veterans working at Barclays to find out more about how they have been comprehensively supported in finding their new career path.

"The Barclays programme exemplifies why all businesses should actively employ veterans to benefit the wider economy. This is why employability has formed a key pillar of our Veterans' Strategy Action Plan."

For over 10 years, our MVO initiatives have supported Servicemen and women are able to learn more about – and take steps towards building – careers beyond the military, and ultimately land the right job. Barclays’ innovative approach has been recognised by the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme, with Barclays being awarded the highest level Gold Award. This support has been recognized in the US through the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. Military and Veterans Outreach consists of the following areas:

AFTER (Armed Forces Transition, Employment & Resettlement) UK – AFTER supports service personnel through its various outreach activities, including CV & Interview workshops and its Military Talent Scheme, which offers a 12 week secondment into Barclays. Since 2013, more than 7,000 Servicemen and women have been supported by AFTER and over 600 veterans have secured jobs with Barclays. If you are a veteran, service leaver, military spouse/partner and want us to keep in touch, please register your details with our Military Talent Pool.

MVO US (Military & Veterans Outreach – US) - MVO-US supports opportunities to rise for veterans, military spouses and members of the Guard & Reserves in the US. In addition to AFTER, the bank provides support including: a comprehensive military leave policy, onboarding resources, and support for veteran business owners. MVO-US works with VSO partners nationally and in the communities in which we do business. 

AFB (Armed Forces Banking) UK – Launched in 2015, this innovative suite of banking products and services is designed to meet the unique needs of those Serving, veterans and forces families.

VETS (Veterans’ Employment Transition Support) – Launched in 2015, VETS is a collaborative employability initiative designed to help all veterans – regardless of rank, Service or circumstance – find the right job, through the online platform Founded and powered by Barclays, it is open to any organisation keen to provide opportunities for veterans and is the market leader in peer-to-peer mentoring for veterans in the UK.

AFTER Programme

Every year, through the AFTER programme, Barclays supports thousands of Servicemen and women with their transition into civilian employment after serving in the Armed Forces, and aims to highlight the economic value these highly skilled individuals can bring to the corporate world.

Barclays AFTER helps to address the issues faced by ex, as well as current Service personnel in their transition, by providing work placements, direct employment opportunities, CV and interview coaching, and money management sessions.  Barclays also supports Reservist employees through a dedicated HR policy.

VETS is a coalition of the willing and brings together the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), charities and businesses to share best practice and improve outcomes for the military community.  VETS utilises this one stop shop online platform to highlight forces friendly employers, share veteran targeted roles, showcase appropriate events and connect individuals from across geographies and industries via the mentoring tool.

Barclays Military Talent Scheme

The Barclays Military Talent Scheme (MTS) is open to any Service Leaver – regardless of Service, rank or experience - who is in their Resettlement period for the duration of the scheme.

At Barclays, we recognise that Service personnel have outstanding experience, transferable skills and core Values that can add significant value to the commercial sector.  From leadership skills to strategic thinking and problem solving, the strengths displayed by Service Leavers and Veterans are highly transferable into Financial Services. 

About the Barclays Military Talent Scheme

The Military Talent Scheme runs for 8 – 12 weeks. We recognise every resettlement journey is unique, so we aim to provide opportunities to join the scheme throughout the year. The scheme is open to any Service Leaver able to complete the placement whilst in the period of their Resettlement. As the placements are for those still in Service, all costs are to be incurred as part of the individual’s Resettlement process.

Placements are available across Barclays business areas with locations spread across the UK.

Depending on past experience, transferable skills and applicant interests, you will be matched to an appropriate placement. This will be discussed and agreed during the application stages and subsequent interviews.

We invest in the development of our colleagues to make sure we have the most dedicated and driven people in the market and this opportunity may be a stepping stone to a future career in Barclays. 

However, applicants should be aware from the outset that whilst the MTS provides a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in a corporate environment, there is no guarantee that it will lead to full-time employment with Barclays. 

No prior experience of the Financial Services sector is expected or required, rather we are looking for candidates with potential. Our aim is to provide you with a platform on which to hone your skills and abilities and highlight the breadth of your transferable skills.

The Military Talent Scheme aims to support the transition in to the civilian workplace, by providing the following:

  • Corporate acumen: Participants will broaden their knowledge of the Financial Services industry and develop an understanding of the corporate environment
  • In-depth experience: Participants will have the opportunity to leverage their skills and gain sector experience by undertaking a role as part of a permanent team
  • Networking: Participants will attend speaker sessions hosted by senior leaders across the bank, have the opportunity to ‘shadow’ key business people and also attend regular networking events 
  • Mentors: Participants will each be assigned a mentor to support them throughout their placement, commencing directly after acceptance on to the programme
  • Setting up for success: Participants will attend CV and interview skills workshops and will be guided through the internal jobs board – and given full access – to understand how their skills align to open roles

Application Process

The application window for the Military Talent Scheme 2022 is open and all applicants must apply via the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) - RightJob Number N422169; you will also find further details on the application process and submit your application.

IMPORTANT – Your application must be submitted at least 10 weeks before your preferred start date.


Do I need to do the Full 12 weeks? 
The minimum duration is 10 weeks.

Is the opportunity Available for Veterans?
Unfortunately not. Due to Barclays anti-exploitation policy, we do not offer unpaid work experience, and therefore, the scheme is only open to those in their final year of Service where they are able to negotiate time away from their military chain of command.

Are there opportunities across the UK?
Yes, The MTS runs across all of Barclays geographical locations, where suitable placements can be secured.

How do I apply? 
Applications go directly through the CTP, to ensure candidates fit eligibility criteria.

I only have 5 weeks’ resettlement; can I still apply?
The minimum duration is 10 weeks.

What placements are available?
There a range of placements available across a wide variety of business areas, but they vary from scheme to scheme, depending on candidate fit and business need.

Is the placement paid?
All candidates must be employed by the MoD for the duration of their placement.

Can I Apply for a specific business area?
Your application is to the central MTS, but as part of the process you may indicate any specific areas of interest you may have and this will be taken into consideration as part of the placement process

Barclays North West Military Day

Thursday 3rd November 2022, 1200 to 1700

Barclays Eagle Lab, Manchester


 The Barclays North West Military Talent Day will provide an opportunity for service personnel, veterans and military spouses/partners interested in Financial Services to get an insight into the sector. This onsite event will take place at our Barclays Eagle Lab in Manchester city centre. During the day, you will hear about opportunities across the North West with Barclays, including at our campus in Knutsford. This is our transatlantic tech command centre and one of the largest centres for information security in the UK. It's the vital strategic powerhouse behind our global operations. 

The day will commence with an overview of Barclays and the diverse business units and functions. Attendees of this event will have the opportunity to hear from senior leaders, colleagues and members of the Barclays Military Resource Group, who will share their experiences of transitioning from the military into civilian employment. The highlight of the event is that all attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Hiring Managers face to face. All of these hiring managers will have live vacancies in their business areas and are seeking military talent. The event will close with a networking session. 

Should attendees wish to continue networking, we will also be hosting a Veterans into Financial Services event that same evening with other organisations joining us from the Financial Services sector. Joining documentation and a full agenda will be sent separately ahead of the event.

Please note this event is only relevant to those who are in their final six months to one year of service in the UK Armed Forces.
