About the role
Investment Banking at Barclays operates in two major business units:
Coverage / M&A
- We have a global coverage sector presence and strong global connectivity this helps our bankers provide holistic and cohesive strategic advisory services and financing solutions to clients in their sector of expertise, helping them identify M&A solutions, capital raising strategies, and growth opportunities.
- Coverage teams originate client transactions and execute through partnerships with Product Specialists, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A), equity, and debt financings, leveraging their collective deep industry knowledge to deliver tailored solutions for clients.
- Bankers are responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with C-suite executives and key decision-makers, originating new opportunities.
Consumer Retail Group (CRG)
- Provides financial and strategic advisory services to clients across key Consumer and Retail sectors.
Coverage - CSEE
- Provides financial and strategic advisory services to clients in Central & South Eastern Europe, covering all sectors and products with a focus on M&A.
The Energy Transition Group (ETG)
- The Energy Transition Group (ETG) focuses on the entire energy value chain, with a strong emphasis on decarbonisation providing clients with strategic and financial advice across Barclays products.
Financial Institutions Group (FIG)
- The Financial Institutions team at Barclays provides clients with strategic and financial advice and capital markets financing solutions across various financial services verticals, including Asset & Wealth Managers, Banks, Insurance, Financial Technology, and Specialty Finance.
Financial Sponsors Group (FSG)
- The Financial Sponsors Group originate and execute M&A, Leveraged Finance and ECM transactions on behalf of the portfolio companies of the largest global private equity firms across industry and geographic verticals. The team is one of the leading private equity coverage groups globally.
Healthcare
- The Healthcare team at Barclays provides clients with financial and strategic advisory services across key global Healthcare sectors, including Biopharma/Life Sciences, Medtech, Services, and Tools/Diagnostics.
Industrials
- The Industrials team at Barclays provides clients with strategic advice and financing solutions across various industrial verticals, including Business Services, Capital Goods, Chemicals, Paper & Packaging, Metals & Mining, and Transportation.
Infrastructure
- The Infrastructure team provides sector- and product-agnostic strategic advisory, financing and risk management services to a broad range of private equity, sovereign wealth funds, and pension funds. The team works across sub-sectors within the broadening infrastructure asset class.
Real Estate
- The Real Estate team covers a broad range of sectors across office, retail, industrial, self-storage, residential, student accommodation, healthcare, data centers, and hospitality & leisure.
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)
- Oversees activities related to merger and acquisition transactions, including origination and execution of deals, corporate governance, activism, and hostile defense assignments.
Telecom Media and Technology (TMT)
- Provides a full spectrum of services to address strategic advisory, financing, and risk management needs across several industry verticals including, but not limited to, Telecom Infrastructure, Media, Internet, Software, Payments, Tech Services, Gaming and Leisure
UK Advisory
- As sector generalists, the team collaborates closely with sector-specialist colleagues across various industries to provide advice on UK situations, with a particular focus on M&A. They also offer critical guidance on navigating the UK Takeover regime concerning public M&A.
Capital Markets
Capital Markets specialises in equity and debt origination, loans, structuring, risk management and syndication.
Corporate Broking (UK)
- Corporate Broking (UK): Advises UK listed companies on their relationship with equity markets, providing independent advice and engagement on all market-making and equity-raising activities for quoted company clients.
Debt Capital Markets (DCM)
- Barclays Debt Capital Markets (DCM) Teams work on bond issuance across Corporate, Financial, and Sovereign borrowers. They keep prospective borrowers updated on credit markets, give advice on funding options and strategies in the debt markets, and manage the execution of bond transactions for clients.
Equity Capital Markets (ECM)
- The Equity Capital Markets (ECM) Group sits within Barclays’ Investment Bank Division and is responsible for initiating, structuring, underwriting, and executing equity transactions for corporate issuers, financial sponsors, and shareholders.
Leveraged Finance
- Leveraged Finance: Barclays Leveraged Finance (LevFin) team is responsible for originating, structuring, and executing debt financing solutions for corporate and private equity clients. They provide bespoke capital solutions across leveraged loans, high-yield bonds, and other debt instruments to support mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, refinancings, dividend recapitalizations, and other strategic transactions.
Risk Solutions Group (RSG)
- The Risk Solutions Group (RSG) helps corporate clients manage their exposure to financial risks, such as moves in interest rates, foreign exchange rates, and inflation.
Strategic Capital & Alternative Finance
- Strategic Capital is a principal credit investing business within Capital Markets that invests Barclays’ balance sheet in attractive opportunities across the capital stack. They support strategically important clients and generate strong risk-adjusted returns.
Sustainable Banking Group (SBG)
- The Sustainable Banking Group supports the sustainability needs of clients across all industries. They offer a tailored approach to coverage, advice, and execution across M&A, risk management, equity, and debt.
Sustainable Project Finance (SPF)
- The SPF Team drives portfolio decision-making on financial and non-financial risks. They support Barclays' ambition to deliver USD $1 trillion in sustainable and transition finance by the end of 2030. The team provides sustainability expertise in the design of new products, drives the execution of Barclays’ Sustainable Finance commitments and strategy, and offers intensive training to ensure team members have the financial markets fundamentals needed to grow and develop.
Syndicate
- This team bridges the gap between the private and public sides of an investment bank, executing primary market transactions of fixed income securities.

What to expect
Our two-year Investment Banking Expert Programme focuses on helping you develop specialist expertise in as an analyst. Analysts are the heart of every team in Investment Banking, playing a key role in creating the high-quality solutions that we deliver to our clients. So, from day one, you’ll have an active role in the team and real responsibility; working with senior professionals, collaborating with colleagues across the bank, and dealing direct with clients as soon as you’re ready. It’s a complete grounding in the corporate world; mixing the technical skills it takes to excel in financial analysis with the people and presentation skills it takes to turn insight into action.
You could be involved in everything from calculating the financial impact of an acquisition, sale or disposal to modelling how the deal would affect a client’s performance. You could be advising on how to finance the transaction or who to approach with the deal. Often, you’ll collaborate with accountants, lawyers and PR firms, as well as with colleagues across Barclays Investment Bank to provide seamless execution of the deal.

Debt Capital Markets works with investment grade rated companies to raise primary debt. You’ll work with our experts to design and structure fixed income securities and market them to investors.

This team brings an analytical approach to traditional corporate finance questions. We look at topics such as how companies allocate cash, manage their capital structure and mitigate financial risks.

Equity Capital Markets
This team advises corporations, institutions and governments on a range of products to raise equity capital, monetise positions and manage stakes. You’ll help structure and execute equity and equity-linked transactions.

Leveraged Finance
Leveraged Finance originates and structures debt financing transactions for Financial Sponsor-owned and Sub-Investment Grade companies, usually resulting in capital structures relying on a higher degree of financial leverage.

RSG helps corporate clients manage their exposure to financial risks – such as moves in interest rates, foreign exchange rates and inflation.
