Join the Legal team to protect Barclays, its employees, and its brands while ensuring global competitiveness and compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts.

Join us as a Risk & Regulatory Legal Counsel VP in the Private Bank & Wealth Management (PBWM) Legal Team where you will play a key role in managing the team’s compliance with the legal risk framework as well as providing regulatory legal support to the PBWM business.

The primary part of the role is to lead on the teams support of its Laws, Rules & Regulations (LRR’s) Risk Management, including:

  • Managing the team’s inventory of PBWM business’ LRR’s in both the UK and EU
  • Decomposition (i.e. breaking down into key obligations) of LRR’s in both the UK and EU
  • Legal Adequacy Reviews of business controls related to LRR’s
  • Managing updates of LRR’s, including evaluating the materiality and impact of regulatory changes on the PBWM LRRs
  • Implementation of new LRR’s into the PBWM’s risk framework and assisting with governance and control.

The secondary part of the role will be providing general regulatory legal support to various PBWM business stakeholders.

Key skills required for this role include:

  • Qualified lawyer
  • Experience in financial services regulation
  • Knowledge and experience of legal risk governance, policies and procedures
  • Strong legal and regulatory interpretation and analysis skillsets
  • Robust focus on controls and compliance with regulatory obligations
  • Solutions orientated individual who is robust in the face of challenge
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build trust and strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.”

Other desired criteria:

  •  Private Bank or Wealth Management experience would be very helpful
  • The team covers the UK, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man booking locations, so any experience with some or all of those jurisdictions is helpful
  • There is a very high volume of fast paced, dynamic work, so we need a self-motivated, experienced lawyer who has strong prioritisation, time management and stakeholder/expectation management skill sets
  • Strong commercial/business acumen and the ability to take a commercial approach (when appropriate)
  • As well as Manchester the wider PBWM Legal team includes colleagues in London, Monaco and Switzerland who cover Banking, Credit, Investments and Funds and they are all friendly, outgoing, approachable people with strong work ethics and a good team bond, so the candidate should enjoy and thrive in that type of environment

Purpose of the role

To ensure that the activities in the Private Bank & Wealth Management division are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies to manage risk related to non-adherence of laws, rules and regulations.
  • Legal advice and support to the bank's Private Bank & Wealth Management division on matters arising from the investment, credit and banking products/services provided by the Private Bank & Wealth Management division.
  • Subject matter support in the Legal department’s representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to Private Bank & Wealth Management activities, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Creation and review of legal documents for the Private Bank & Wealth Management division to ensure the bank’s adherence with applicable laws, rules and regulations.  Maintaining and updating form legal documentation for the investment Private Bank & Wealth Management division.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's Private Bank & Wealth Management activities.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to the Private Bank & Wealth Management division.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

  • OR for an individual contributor, they will be a subject matter expert within own discipline and will guide technical direction. They will lead collaborative, multi-year assignments and guide team members through structured assignments, identify the need for the inclusion of other areas of specialisation to complete assignments. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem solving processes.
  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
