In Risk Barclays develops, recommends, and implements controls and cost-effective approaches to minimise Barclay's risks, identifies and analyses potential sources of loss to minimise risk and estimate the potential financial consequences of an occurring loss.

Overall purpose of role

The person filling the role is responsible for leading the Retail Credit IVU team focusing on validation and approval of Retail Credit models used in RWAs calculations, IFRS9 ECL, Business, Strategy and Marketing. These models/frameworks are crucially important for daily business management of the Barclays Group and its legal entities as well as to meet important regulatory requirements with respect to independent validation of these frameworks.

Role has accountability for approval of models within remit.

Key Accountabilities

Management (50%)

  • Manage and supervise a high performing team (10+ FTEs), as well as model risk assessment and independent review & challenge of methodologies being validated.
  • Sustain, empower, develop leaders, articulating firm’s values, and culture as a senior professional within independent validation. The role holder will set an example for junior team members as well as work collaboratively and share knowledge across the team.
  • Project manage model validations, usually within very tight regulatory and internal deadlines.

Technical validation (50%)

  • Personally lead model validation efforts, engaging with model owner and developers to ensure validation expectations around the supply of supporting materials required for validation are clear;
  • Perform technical analyses, data analyses, benchmarking, build challenger models (if needed) to support the validation review and challenge process for all new and existing models, to ensure accuracy of existing metrics to the standards required by Group Model Risk Policy and model validation standards and to drive continuous improvements in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Produce high quality model validation reports and presentations for relevant model governance committees, with a particular focus on noting limitations, weaknesses and assumptions
  • Support senior model risk management team in their participations in different internal models risk related and regulatory meetings.

Person Specification

Quantitative: Proven performance, experience and expertise in validation and risk management of retail credit IRB and IFRS9 models and associated large and complex systems of models are required.

Knowledge, understanding and experience in the implementation of regulators’ requirements on model risk management are also a must have.

Qualitative: Leadership abilities and influencing skills

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Highly numerate, as demonstrated by Honours degree, Masters or PhD (or similar) in a quantitative subject such as Mathematics, Physics, Operational Research, Statistics, Economics, or Finance
  • Significant experience in either model development or in model validation, hands-on experience in model development, model specification, model selection, model testing and/or validation of retail credit IRB and IFRS9 models
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements, specifically, CRR, SS11/13, EBA/GL/2016/07, EBA-RTS-2018-04, EBA-GL-2019-03 and EBA-GL-2017-16, for AIRB models
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, ability to produce high quality written communication including reviews of models, risk policies, and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of Python, SAS or R.
  • Leadership and people management

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in quantitative fields, such as Mathematics, Physics, Operational Research, Finance, and Economics
  • Specialized in following modelling areas: Retail Credit models, AIRB, IFRS9, CCAR and Stress Testing
  • Beyond risk management, knowledge in financial projection, capital management and treasury are highly desirable.

Purpose of the role

To validate and approve models for specific usages both at inception and on a periodic basis, and of model changes, as well as conducting annual reviews. 

Accountabilities

  • Validation of models for their intended use and scope, commensurate with the complexity and materiality of the models.
  • Approval or rejection of a model or usage based on assessment of the model’s conceptual soundness, performance under intended use and the clarity of the documentation of the model’s inherent risks, limitations and weaknesses.
  • Assessment of any compensating controls used to mitigate Model risk.
  • Documentation of validation findings and recommendations in clear and concise reports, providing actionable insights for model improvement.
  • Evaluation of the coherence of model interactions and quality of Large Model Framework aggregate results that generate output for regulatory submissions or management decision making and planning.
  • Design of the framework and methodology to measure and, where possible, quantify model risk, including the assessment of framework level uncertainty.

Director Expectations

  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
