Join the Legal team to protect Barclays, its employees, and its brands while ensuring global competitiveness and compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts.

In this role, your primary focus will be to act as a knowledge lawyer to Barclay's Group Corporate and Treasury Legal (GCTL) team and to support the team in managing legal risk by developing and implementing a knowledge management strategy aligned to the team’s objectives and supporting the team in advising and managing legal risk arising from new laws, rules and regulations (LRRs).

GCTL is comprised of corporate, capital markets and prudential regulatory lawyers supporting Barclays Head Office functions including Finance, Treasury, Regulatory Policy, Risk, Investor Relations and Corporate Secretariat on managing legal risk in relation to general corporate law matters, financial reporting, capital markets transactions, regulatory capital, prudential regulation and other projects or legal issues of group-wide significance.

More specifically, the key accountabilities include:

  • Monitoring legal and market developments and advising the team on risk, trends and key changes
  • Demonstrating, promoting and overseeing best practice for knowledge capture, curation and dissemination
  • Producing analysis and updates for internal briefings
  • Designing and delivering, and supporting team members in the preparation and delivery of, training to the business
  • Leading the development and delivery of the team’s knowledge plan and strategy to support stakeholder priorities
  • Collaboration with legal tech, innovation and project management teams to drive efficiencies
  • Supporting the capture and sharing of knowhow across teams through platforms and process improvements
  • Working closely with team members to co-ordinate subject matter expertise input on deliverables to support the maintenance and development of a global LRR inventory
  • Supporting team members in ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, relevant policies, standards and controls
  • Close coordination with the Central Legal Team maintaining the global LRR inventory, and with Risk and Compliance colleagues involved in the management of the legal risk framework
  • Engaging with internal and external legal colleagues, business stakeholders and second line of defence.   

To be successful in this role you should have:

  • Previous experience working as a senior lawyer or knowledge lawyer or equivalent, with experience across a broad range of the areas covered by the GCTL team, with a willingness to adapt and upskill on any less familiar areas.

  • Experience of advising on financial services regulation, with advice on corporate matters, public disclosure and securities issuance also beneficial, alongside an understanding of parallel US legal and regulatory requirements and have a proven track record of using these skills in an advisory capacity.

Other highly valued skills include:

  • PSL (Professional Support Lawyer) background would be preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to analyse complex issues and present the analysis and recommendations in a clear and concise way for all stakeholders
  • Sound judgement

This is a permanent role based in London.

Purpose of the role

To ensure that the bank’s corporate and corporate governance (including public disclosures). Creation and periodic review of Legal documents in accordance with contractual arrangements policy. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Legal advice and support to the bank on a wide range of legal issues, including disclosure and financial reporting, company and corporate law issues, corporate governance, Group Treasury securities issuances and programmes, regulatory capital, recovery and resolution planning and disclosures and contractual arrangements with financial utility providers.
  • Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to company and corporate legislation and regulatory requirements, Barclays’ public disclosures, Group Treasury securities issuances and programmes, recovery and resolution planning and disclosures regulatory capital and network management, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations, working together with other internal teams as appropriate.
  • Creation and review of legal documents such as public disclosures, results announcements, securities offering documents, contracts, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's corporate and corporate governance, public disclosure, financial reporting, Group Treasury securities issuances, recovery and resolution planning, regulatory capital and network management activities.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to corporate and company law issues, corporate governance, treasury securities issuances, recovery and resolution planning, regulatory capital and network management.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
