Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Extensive client coverage experience, with a strong preference given to experience covering the insurance industry.
  • Specialised knowledge of the insurance sector including financial statement analysis, credit analysis, and experience in loan/trade origination and deal execution to the insurance and insurance run-off sectors. 
  • Strong knowledge of corporate and investing banking products, services and policies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. 
  • Credit risk management expertise – requirement to complete risk accreditation within 12 months of being in role, plus any other targeted learning or annual accreditations, and application of the skills to a high level on a daily basis.

  • There will be an expectation that the candidate can swiftly raise a deal team and project manage a transaction across CB in terms of structuring, risk, legal, portfolio and deal execution. 
  • Ability to network effectively both internally and externally and maintain/develop relationships with C-Suite client officials, KBIs, product specialists and other key figures in the business community.
  • Business development plans will need to be developed and implemented into a selective customer base of the Bank’s most sophisticated and complex customers. Sales activity will be demanding both in terms of the market place, which is very competitive, and the need to structure banking proposals for a critical customer audience. Customers will be sophisticated, demanding excellent and highly professional service. 

Purpose of the role

The position is a client relationship management role in the International Corporate Bank (ICB).  The banker will be responsible for delivering a broad range of Corporate and Investment Banking solutions to a diverse group of companies within the Insurance sector.  The role requires the coverage of a portfolio of existing and prospect clients, building deep client relationships, providing excellent client service, generating business development ideas and targeting new client acquisition.  This will include responsibility for managing a portfolio of lending exposures, and the role requires both effective risk management of this portfolio along with a focus on driving strong client returns, consistent with Barclays’ guidance. 

The Insurance team is responsible for the coverage of mid to large cap clients across Life, General, Specialty, Reinsurance, Run-off and Insurance Brokers.  The ability to collaborate with coverage partners across geographies and time zones is required for success.  The role requires an experienced Insurance banker capable of driving business and making meaningful connections with C-suite and senior Treasury decision makers, as well as driving the ESG and Citizenship agenda with these individuals.  The successful candidate should have strong corporate finance, credit and Corporate Banking product (payments, liquidity management, debt, trade finance, foreign exchange) expertise and strong transaction execution skills.  The ability to demonstrate Insurance sector expertise is essential, and strong knowledge of the Lloyd’s of London space in particular is strongly valued. 

As a Director in the team, the role will also involve the coaching, training and development of more junior team members.  Leadership skills are critical as the role involves leading cross-disciplinary deal and client coverage teams. 

Accountabilities

  • Managing a portfolio of complex and strategically important customer relationships, maximising sustainable income and client profitability through providing excellent service and becoming recognised as a trusted advisor to clients. 
  • Developing the portfolio through increasing wallet share as well as winning new business and for the purpose of this leading robust deal teams.  Focus on collaboration with partners across Barclays and ensuring strength of direction, momentum and implementation of projects including complex cash management, debt, trade finance and FX.
  • Coordinate CIB balance sheet commitments with regional and global partners, including credit, portfolio management and loan syndication teams. 
  • Determine the products that most effectively meet client needs and be able to provide solutions, at short notice, on a proactive and reactive basis. 
  • Establishing and growing profile as recognised subject matter expert within the Insurance industry both internally and externally.  Build effective network of Key Business Introducers (“KBIs”) with a view to targeting prospective clients and winning new business. 
  • Ensure effective risk management across the portfolio. Ensure compliance with mandatory risk policies and procedures relating to regulatory, operational, legal risk, financial crime and credit risk.
  • Driving, monitoring and recording performance through the use of CRM systems, recording call reports and pipeline information and completing client plans. 
  • Seek, share and embed best practice, both for the Insurance global franchise and across the Barclays group.
  • Make an active contribution to Barclays International’s culture and community at a local, regional and national level. 

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
