Overall purpose of role
Advanced Engineering Lead will participate in strategic technical discussions with partners and help shape their technical agenda. In addition, you will play a large part in the delivery of engineering efforts, collaborating internally across Barclays’ technical experts to solve complex problems and deliver solutions that implement the firm's business and technology strategy. The role is pivotal within the domain, and will have broad impact on Barclays group business areas through the engagements and deliverables undertaken. These engagements are key to the ongoing modernisation of our portfolio, driving the practices, platforms and frameworks that support the accelerated delivery of business value. This role is critical to the hands-on creation of solutions that span Cloud, GenAI and automation spaces to realise business value, supported the creation of patterns usable by the overall firm. As well as strong linkages to partner with the Business Units and enable their deliveries, the role also involves a focus on the tools and capabilities that are needed to evolve our technology delivery practices. This requires close engagement with CTO partners around Public Cloud, Developer Experience, Toolchain and Frameworks.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage the Engineering function in Pune, working across Product Management and Solutions Architecture to provide a fully integrated model.
  • Engage with Business Unit partners on the delivery of key initiatives that support optimisation of their business flows. Support the upskilling of teams in those Business Units as part of the delivery.
  • Play an active part in the creation of solutions that meet the non-functional needs for a concrete business initiative, while delivering in a way that’s generic enough to apply more widely to solutions across the firm
  • Support appropriate innovation across the domain, enabling the use of modern technologies tied to realisable business benefit
  • Partner with product and engineering teams across the firm to enhance and integrate frameworks and tools that remove toil from engineering activities, enabling delivery teams to move at pace, leverage modern design patterns, and sustain a high bar of quality
  • Understand, identify and curate innovation and improvement opportunities for complex, high-scale system deliveries across the global firm
  • Scope opportunities and support PoC/PoV on emerging solutions and technologies, staying ahead of anticipated trends and helping teams adopt novel approaches where skills may be lacking
  • Be a role model for engineering excellence
  • Be an active participant in our community of engineers, helping develop expert engineers across the firm.
  • Partner strongly across cyber security, infrastructure and cloud spaces, supporting the ongoing evolution of the organisation and our ability to balance risks and innovation appropriately.

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience of working within financial services across a number of technology roles
  • Extensive experience in designing and delivering Solutions incorporating innovative technologies.
  • Expert track record of working collaboratively and developing strong, productive internal and external relationships across a matrixed global organisation
  • Application of leading edge leadership and development practices
  • Highly organised, diligent and skilled in managing complex projects (strategic and tactical)
  • A world class technical communicator, able to command respect from peers and junior engineers alike. Should be an obvious magnet based upon credibility, empathy and ethos

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in building and leading high-performance teams by fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to align team objectives with strategic business goals, resulting in increased productivity, innovation, and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Experience in exploration and deployment of Innovative technologies like Agentic AI systems for example that can reason, plan, and act autonomously. Collaborate with other teams and Business Units to integrate these capabilities.
  • Experience in the creation of scalable, reliable, secure distributed systems using modern technologies and best practices.
  • Creating assessment approaches to identify emerging technologies and companies of relevance
  • Measuring the value of different approaches to technical problems
  • Outstanding relationship & stakeholder management skills
  • Highly articulate and effective communicator – both in technical and business language; excellent verbal and written communication skills

Purpose of the role

To  lead and manage engineering teams, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions, driving technical excellence, fostering a culture of innovation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align technical decisions with business objectives. 

Accountabilities

  • Lead engineering teams effectively, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture to achieve project goals and meet organizational objectives.
  • Oversee timelines, team allocation, risk management and task prioritization to ensure the successful delivery of solutions within scope, time, and budget.
  • Mentor and support team members' professional growth, conduct performance reviews, provide actionable feedback, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluation and enhancement of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency, streamline workflows, and optimize team productivity.
  • Collaboration with business partners, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions and ensure a cohesive approach to product development.
  • Enforcement of technology standards, facilitate peer reviews, and implement robust testing practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions.

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
