Barclays Strategy

Join the Strategy team to develop strategic plans in collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team. You'll set the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy to ensure sustainable growth and alignment with ESG standards, positioning Barclays for long-term success.

As a senior leader within the Decision Intelligence team, the role holder will be directly accountable for shaping and influencing BUK strategy and working with ExCo level audiences to make customer centred Decisions for our c.20m customers. They will be driving the analytics agenda, transforming the way we understand and support our customers, and in doing so transforming the fortunes of the business by delivering ground-breaking sustainable and scalable analytics that better explain, detect, and predict customer needs, earlier and faster than anyone else. 

They will be a strategic partner to senior stakeholders across the business, Barclays Group and 3rd parties, driving consistently excellent outcomes and helping BUK achieve its overall strategic ambitions. They will play a key role in the broader management of the team, the successful execution of objectives and activity by more-junior members, and in developing and maintaining a high-performance culture. 

The role will require and involve the use of standard, as well as advanced analytics techniques, including the use of machine learning model development, to support commercial objectives and optimise customer experiences, taking end-to-end responsibility for substantial deliveries and areas of activity across the team’s primary pillars of work, spanning the breadth of strategy, advanced analytics, performance, as well as stakeholder relations.  

You will be a thought leader in the field of analytics in order to make numerous, frequent, and complex business decisions to drive the business and deliver on the immediate and future goals of the business. You can manage teams both onsite and offsite. People will trust you for your decision making, for your experience and you can communicate technical solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical users.  

Key Accountabilities 

  • The role holder will be responsible for activity across multiple or focused areas of the team’s primary pillars, as directed by business demand, skillset and capability, and personal and team development. 
  • Vision and Strategy 
  • Insights: lead the development of customer insights for sharing and discussion with the Customer and Digital ExCo. These should inject an outside-in perspective on how macro drivers in the external environment are shaping the industry, markets and client behaviours. 
  • Competitor Intelligence: develop a deep understanding of how competitors are using data to support customers, reacting to changes and creating products. Drive the benchmarking of Barclays’ relative strengths and weaknesses and source analysis of peer performance from market updates and results cycles. 
  • Vision and Strategy: determine a vision for the analytical team, identifying opportunity to compete and grow, as well as future market and competitive positioning. Take ownership for setting out the strategic actions required to transform from current to target state, develop a followship and drive engagement amongst colleagues working on their agenda.  

Lead: Demonstrably act as one of BUKs thought leader (internally and externally) and acknowledged analytics experts acting as an Advisor on analytics to the Head of Advanced Analytics and members of BUK ExCo with the ability to challenge the BUK senior leadership including Executive Committee Members on commercial value capture opportunities 

Planning and Performance 

  • Forward Planning: develop a forward plan of Operational Priorities that drive delivery of the business strategy and presented at varying degrees of detail with suitable strategic narrative. These priorities should include the allocation of Strategic Investment (SI), phasing of delivery milestones and incremental hiring. 
  • Delivery Governance and Dependencies: own the execution of associated delivery governance, including Monthly Business Review (MBR) submissions and maintaining trusted senior relationships across broad governance stakeholder areas. 
  • Sets challenging objectives for personal, team and functional improvement and holds others to account in delivering these. Takes the lead in driving succession planning, ensuring the organisation retains and develops the key talent needed for the future. 

Shaping and Design 

  • Customer Lifecycle: shaping our approach to customer lifecycle to drive franchise health/customer value. Utilising analytical tools and industry knowledge to drive value through marketing effectiveness and data assets.  
  • Problem Statement: proactively lean into critical priorities, where additional support is required, partnering with the respective AEs to define a clear set of objectives, constraints and scope.  
  • Solution Options and Recommendation: bring an outside-in perspective, technical expertise and understanding to identify Barclays’ leverage points and potential solution options, evaluating associated delivery feasibility and anticipated commercials. Determine and articulate a persuasive overall recommendation based on the assessment of relative pros and cons. 
  • Business Case and Plan: set out high-level business requirements for proposed solutions, establishing an over-arching blueprint for downstream delivery teams. Prescribe immediate next steps and action plan, accompanied by a business case for implantation.  

Purpose of the role
To analyse and assess market trends, competitor landscape, and potential risks and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.

Accountabilities

  • Development and presentation of compelling strategic recommendations to senior management, addressing key business challenges and opportunities.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of implemented strategies, recommending adjustments as needed.
  • Communication of complex strategic information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders.
  • Identification and assessment of potential risks associated with the bank's strategic plans and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Conducting in-depth research and analysis of internal and external data, including market trends, competitor analysis, and economic forecasts.


Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
