Join the Strategy team to develop strategic plans in collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team. You'll set the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy to ensure sustainable growth and alignment with ESG standards, positioning Barclays for long-term success.

The Strategy and Planning team sits within the PBWM Chief of Staff function and acts as a strategic partner to PBWM ExCo, senior leadership, Barclays Group, and key external stakeholders. The team plays a critical role in defining PBWM’s long-term vision, shaping strategic priorities, and ensuring disciplined execution across the PBWM transformation agenda (Strengthen, Scale, Sustain).

The successful candidate will lead high-impact strategic work, providing insight-driven recommendations that support growth, strong client outcomes, and sustainable shareholder value. The role requires strong analytical capability, executive-level communication skills, and the ability to operate with credibility across senior stakeholders.

Purpose of the Role

To analyse market trends, competitive dynamics, and internal performance to identify strategic risks and opportunities, informing PBWM’s strategic direction and transformation priorities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and present clear, compelling strategic recommendations to senior management, addressing key business challenges and growth opportunities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies, identifying where course correction or intervention is required.
  • Communicate complex strategic concepts concisely to a wide range of stakeholders, including ExCo, Board, and Group functions.
  • Identify, assess, and articulate strategic risks, proposing appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of internal and external data, including market trends, competitor activity, economic outlooks, and regulatory developments.

Specifics of the role

The role holder will have skills to lead work in the following areas:

Vison & Strategy

Understanding the competitive landscape.  Developing market insights.  Contributing to development of PBWM’s overall strategy:

  • Research and analysis of market trends, competitor dynamics, technology developments, and the economic, political, and regulatory environment.
  • Analyse and synthesise internal and external information.
  • Create compelling presentations and narratives to communicate strategy to senior stakeholders.

Planning

Developing the Operational Priorities transformation plan to deliver the business strategy.  Supporting communication of the plan and evaluating progress:

  • Develop plans aligned to strategy with an understanding of how to execute successful change.
  • Support communication of the plan linked to business’s vision and strategy.
  • Assess progress and effectiveness in delivering target outcomes.  Identify where intervention or adjustment is needed.

Shaping & Design

Shaping approach to selected critical Operational Priorities to realise strategic goals.  Evaluating options and design choices.   Developing blueprints and business cases:

  • Evaluate complex business problems and opportunities.
  • Establish strategic goals.  Design business models and plans to achieve them including   the mitigation of risks.
  • Partner with senior stakeholders to collaborate on proposals and build buy-in.

Stakeholder Relations

Preparing Group-level updates.  Preparing Regulatory updates.  Shaping content for investors and other external agencies:

  • Source, prepare and review content for Group CEO, ExCo and Board and other Group entities.
  • Source, prepare and review content for Regulatory bodies.
  • Shape content for inclusion in Barclays reporting cycles and specific external engagements.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

The right candidate will have:

  • A qualification at degree level.
  • Analytical skill set with strong business and commercial expertise.
  • Strong knowledge of Private Banking and Wealth Management.
  • Demonstrable experience in shaping business strategy, undertaking business planning, shaping strategic initiatives including developing proposition, product/service or distribution (including digital) solutions from a client, colleague, commercial and risk perspective.
  • Strong numeracy and creativity in their approach to structuring and solving business problems through a combination of analysis and intuition.
  • Able to establish a clear and realistic workplan (including appropriate lead-times for peer and senior stakeholder review) and proactively manage their workload and commitments.
  • Adept in stakeholder management and engagement to a senior level.
  • Strong attention to detail, written and oral communication skills.

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:

The right candidate could ideally have:

  • Experience in management / strategy consulting or in-house strategy teams.

This role is based in London.

Purpose of the role

To analyse and assess market trends, competitor landscape, and potential risks and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.

Accountabilities

  • Development and presentation of compelling strategic recommendations to senior management, addressing key business challenges and opportunities.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of implemented strategies, recommending adjustments as needed.
  • Communication of complex strategic information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders.
  • Identification and assessment of potential risks associated with the bank's strategic plans and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Conducting in-depth research and analysis of internal and external data, including market trends, competitor analysis, and economic forecasts.

  • To contribute or set strategy, drive requirements and make recommendations for change. Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies/ processes; deliver continuous improvements and escalate breaches of policies/procedures..

  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem solving processes.
  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
