The Business Analyst (BA) serves as the key link between business stakeholders, product teams, and technology delivery teams. The role is responsible for understanding business needs, analysing processes, eliciting and documenting requirements, and ensuring solutions delivered align with business objectives.

Within the Barclays File Gateway (BFG) and Payments Technology landscape, the BA is expected to have a strong understanding of file processing journeys, payment flows, system integrations, and Agile delivery practices. The individual will work closely with Product Owners, Developers, Testers, Scrum Masters, Operations, and Business stakeholders to drive successful delivery of strategic initiatives and ongoing platform enhancements.

Key Responsibilities

Requirements Management

  • Elicit, analyse, document, and validate business and functional requirements.
  • Facilitate workshops, requirement gathering sessions, and solution discussions with stakeholders.
  • Produce high-quality user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, business requirements, and functional specifications.
  • Ensure requirements are clear, complete, traceable, testable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Support prioritisation and refinement of requirements throughout the delivery lifecycle.

Agile Product Delivery

  • Work closely with Product Owners to maintain a healthy and prioritised product backlog.
  • Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospective sessions.
  • Ensure stories meet Definition of Ready (DoR) before entering development.
  • Support quarterly planning and release planning activities.
  • Contribute to Agile ways of working and continuous improvement initiatives.

End-to-End Analysis & Solution Design

  • Analyse current and future state business processes.
  • Perform impact assessments across upstream and downstream applications.
  • Identify dependencies, risks, and potential delivery constraints.
  • Collaborate with architects, developers, testers, and operations teams to define effective solutions.
  • Ensure proposed changes align with strategic platform objectives.

Barclays File Gateway (BFG) Domain Analysis

  • Analyse end-to-end file submission, validation, routing, processing, and reporting journeys.
  • Understand customer onboarding requirements and file integration processes.
  • Assess impacts of changes across BFG, payment processing platforms, customer channels, and downstream applications.
  • Support initiatives related to file onboarding, platform enhancements, infrastructure upgrades, migration activities, and regulatory change.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for BFG-related requirements and business processes.

Data & File Analysis

  • Analyse payment file formats, specifications, mappings, and validation rules.
  • Support investigations through data analysis and review of file processing outcomes.
  • Work with technical teams to define transformation, validation, and reconciliation requirements.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and incident investigations where required.

Testing & Quality Support

  • Collaborate with testing teams to ensure complete requirement coverage.
  • Participate in test scenario reviews, defect triage sessions, and requirement clarifications.
  • Support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and business verification activities.
  • Ensure acceptance criteria are measurable and suitable for automation where appropriate.
  • Promote shift-left testing and quality-first delivery practices.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with business, product, technology, and operations stakeholders.
  • Facilitate discussions and decision-making across multiple teams.
  • Effectively communicate project impacts, risks, dependencies, and delivery status.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and ensure alignment on requirements and solution outcomes.

Change & Production Readiness

  • Support release planning, implementation, and deployment activities.
  • Assess operational readiness and business impacts.
  • Participate in production validation and post-implementation reviews.
  • Ensure business processes, documentation, and support teams are prepared for change.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Business Analyst within Agile delivery environments.
  • Strong requirements elicitation, analysis, and documentation skills.
  • Experience creating user stories, acceptance criteria, process maps, and business workflows.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyse complex business processes and translate them into deliverable solutions.
  • Experience working with Jira, Confluence, and process modelling tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively across business and technology teams.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience within Corporate Banking, Payments, Digital Banking, or Financial Services.
  • Knowledge of file-based processing solutions and integration platforms.
  • Understanding of payment processing, transaction banking, and customer onboarding journeys.
  • Experience with SQL, data analysis, APIs, and system integrations.
  • Understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and modern delivery practices.
  • Experience working in cross-functional Agile squads.

Highly Desirable – Barclays File Gateway (BFG) Experience

  • Strong functional knowledge of the Barclays File Gateway (BFG) platform.
  • Experience working on BFG enhancements, customer onboarding, migrations, or production support initiatives.
  • Understanding of file lifecycle management, validations, routing, monitoring, and exception handling.
  • Knowledge of payment file formats such as NACHA, ISO 20022, SWIFT, and customer-hosted file integrations.
  • Ability to perform end-to-end impact assessments across BFG and dependent systems.
  • Proven ability to act as an SME for BFG-related business and technology discussions.

Purpose of the role

To support the organisation, achieve its strategic objectives by the identification of business requirements and solutions that address business problems and opportunities. 

Accountabilities

  • Identification and analysis of business problems and client requirements that require change within the organisation.
  • Development of business requirements that will address business problems and opportunities.
  • Collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that proposed solutions meet their needs and expectations.
  • Support the creation of business cases that justify investment in proposed solutions.
  • Conduct feasibility studies to determine the viability of proposed solutions.
  • Support the creation of reports on project progress to ensure proposed solutions are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Creation of operational design and process design to ensure that proposed solutions are delivered within the agreed scope.
  • Support to change management activities, including development of a traceability matrix to ensure proposed solutions are successfully implemented and embedded in the organisation.
