Embark on a transformative journey as part of Functions Digital Channels Business Process Automation Centre of Excellence (FDC BPA CoE) is a strategic platform team that enables business process automation, digital workflow delivery, and integration-led transformation across Functions. The team supports a portfolio of platforms and services that connect cloud platforms, SaaS products, enterprise applications, and internal systems to deliver scalable, secure, and efficient digital solutions.

The FDC BPA CoE platform team is responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and supporting business-critical applications and services, with a focus on Java development, Spring Boot microservices, API integrations, cloud/SaaS connectivity, platform reliability, and continuous engineering improvements across the portfolio.

We are seeking an experienced Java Developer to join the FDC BPA CoE platform team. The successful candidate will work closely with Business Analysts, business stakeholders, solution architects, developers, QA teams, and platform teams to analyse business requirements, design robust technical solutions, develop Java and Spring Boot services, and deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality integrations across cloud platforms, SaaS products, and enterprise systems.

The role will involve hands-on Java development, Spring Boot microservices, REST API design, and integration with cloud platforms, SaaS products, and internal enterprise systems, with a strong focus on engineering best practices, code quality, security, performance, maintainability and Barclays engineering standards.

The candidate will contribute to engineering best practices, support code reviews, mentor junior developers where required, and help maintain high standards for code quality, reliability, security, and operational readiness.

To be successful as a Java Developer, you should have experience with:

  • Hands-on experience in Java development, including strong knowledge of core Java, object-oriented programming, collections, exception handling, concurrency, and design principles.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining Spring Boot services, microservices, and reusable backend components.
  • Strong experience in RESTful API design and development, including request/response modelling, error handling, authentication, authorization, versioning, and API documentation.
  • Experience integrating applications with cloud platforms and enterprise systems using APIs, messaging, event-driven patterns, or integration frameworks.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and source control practices, including GitLab, branching strategies, merge requests, automated build pipelines, and deployment processes.
  • Good understanding of database concepts with the ability to write and optimize SQL queries and work with relational databases.
  • Experience with unit testing, integration testing, code quality tools, and secure coding practices to ensure maintainable and production-ready solutions.
  • Relevant experience working on distributed systems, high-throughput services, application performance, scalability, reliability, monitoring, and operational support.

Some of the highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience working in the Compliance, Colleague, or enterprise digital workplace domain.
  • Experience with integration technologies and patterns, including REST APIs, messaging, event streaming, Kafka, queues, authentication flows, and data transformation.
  • Good knowledge of Spring ecosystem components such as Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Cloud, and dependency injection.
  • Experience with containerization and deployment technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or equivalent platform services.
  • Ability to identify technical issues, dependencies, risks, and delivery blockers, and escalate appropriately to vendors, platform teams, or management as required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot production and non-production issues across application, API, database, and integration layers.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery methodologies and collaborating with globally distributed teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in documenting technical designs, service behaviours, APIs, integration flows, and operational procedures.

  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of engineering outcomes, and contribute to continuous improvement across development, delivery, and support practices.

The location of the role is Pune, IN.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
