About the Specialist Finance Team

The team is a global client coverage team within the ICB managing institutional clients within the speciality finance sector globally, as well as the digital banks.

Key products covered are the traditional transaction banking product set across, payments, liquidity, trade, FX, card issuance & acquiring, and indirect access to payment schemes.A true CIB business, our clients also benefit from capital markets, banking advisory, ECM & DCM, and risk management solutions for which the ICB plays a key role, as Lead Treasury Bankers, in ensuring our clients have full access to the capabilities of the firm.

The team has consistently delivered strong year on year growth with great potential going forward.

Purpose of the role

Reporting directly into the Head of Specialist Finance, this Senior Banker is expected to manage and oversee the performance, risk and controls of a portfolio of sophisticated, strategic clients.The banker is expected to operate across the CIB, being the lead treasury banker to his clients and driving Global Treasury Coverage of their clients.

The role holder will be the most senior coverage banker in the team.The role holder will be role model of the Barclays values and mindset, operating effectively across the CIB, particularly with our markets colleagues to deliver a consistent and compelling experience to our sophisticated global clients.

Accountabilities

As the Relationship Director covering Specialty Finance clients, you will have responsibility for:

  • Delivering profitable performance, growth, and client strategy through effective collaboration across relevant markets, regions and product teams.
  • Working with the respective leads in Investment Banking Coverage, GTB Product, Risk functions, Operations, Technology and Infrastructure to deliver first time for clients, while safeguarding the firm.
  • Understanding the various business models within the sector, and their inherent risks, to ensure business development is in line with the segment client selection criteria and business appetite.
  • Drive client relationship across the Business – working with the other sector leads, Private Bank, Investment Bank, Cards and Payments in conjunction with the ICB Regional Heads and Leadership Team to help develop and monetize specialist finance clients globally to maximize their use of the Corporate Banking product set.
  • Ensure effective risk management across the business. Ensure compliance with mandatory risk policies and procedures relating to regulatory, operational, legal risk, financial crime and credit risk.
  • Make an active contribution to the CIBs culture and community at a local, regional and national level.

  • Demonstrates insight and initiative when approaching challenges and be driven to consistently deliver high performance
  • Capacity to understand internal and external dynamics and to adjust approach accordingly, particularly during changing Credit and Market risk environment.
  • Key awareness of regulatory, political, and reputational sensitivities attaching to clients and industry segments and ability to align behaviours accordingly
  • Technically sound and able to analyse situations to create best outcome for Barclays and the client.
  • Regular exposure to complex clients and situations

Stakeholder Management and Leadership

  • Effective communicator with advanced influencing skills – able to engage and partner across Barclays with teams of high performing individuals. Demonstrate emotional intelligence in dealings with others.
  • Working closely with IB bankers to ensure coordinated coverage of key clients. 
  • High impact - ability to influence others, for the benefit of the business. Challenge the ‘norm’ to identify more effective & innovative ways of delivering to clients.
  • Develop constructive and influential senior relationships with key business partners specifically:
    • Product
    • IB bankers (Markets, Banking coverage, RSG)
    • Middle Office
    • Barclays Wealth (Institutional Advisory team)
    • Business Management
    • Onboarding and KYC teams

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
