Join the Legal team to protect Barclays, its employees, and its brands while ensuring global competitiveness and compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts.

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Legal Counsel to join our team in the financial industry. The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive legal support, ensuring that the company complies with relevant laws and regulations while minimizing legal risks. You will work closely with various departments, including compliance, risk management, and senior management, to advise on a wide range of legal matters, including corporate governance, contracts, financial regulations, and dispute resolution. The Legal Counsel will be responsible for drafting and reviewing legal documents, offering strategic legal advice on business operations, and representing the company in legal proceedings, as needed. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in financial laws and regulations to help shape the company’s legal strategy and mitigate potential risks in an evolving regulatory landscape.

To be successful as a Legal Counsel, you should have experience with:

  • Financial services litigation or investigations
  • In-depth understanding of SEC and FINRA regulations
  • Familiarity with depositions and interviews

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Familiarity with banking regulations, securities laws, and financial products like derivatives, loans, and investment vehicles
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and mitigate potential legal and operational risks in financial services
  • Interpersonal skills for working with regulators, external law firms, internal teams, and clients

Minimum Salary: 317,500

Maximum Salary: 360,666

The minimum and maximum salary/rate information above include only base salary or base hourly rate. It does not include any another type of compensation or benefits that may be available.

Purpose of the role

To advise on and manage litigation, investigation & enforcement proceedings and ensure that these are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for managing litigation, investigations and enforcement including the management of external support.
  • Legal advice and support to the bank on contentious legal matters.
  • Representation of the bank in legal proceedings such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Creation and review of legal documents relevant to cases, and processes, policies and procedures designed to reduce legal and regulatory risk across the bank.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws, rules and regulations that may impact the bank's litigation, investigations, and enforcement activities.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to and/or arising from litigation, investigations, and enforcement proceedings.
  • Proactively identifying, communicating, and providing legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

  • OR for an individual contributor, they will be a subject matter expert within own discipline and will guide technical direction. They will lead collaborative, multi-year assignments and guide team members through structured assignments, identify the need for the inclusion of other areas of specialisation to complete assignments. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem solving processes.
  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
