To provide technical leadership for the GCP product, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure the delivery of high-quality GCP platform services and secure patterns, driving technical excellence, fostering a culture of innovation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align technical decisions with business objectives. 

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience of working within financial services across several technology domains, with experience across GCP and at least one other hyperscaler.
  • Extensive experience in designing and delivering resilient production GCP platforms in a regulated Financial Services environment.
  • Expert track record of working collaboratively and developing strong, productive internal and external relationships across a matrixed global organisation.
  • Application of modern development practices, inc. spec-driven AI coding, TDD, DORA metrics, pair programming and code reviews.
  • Highly organised, diligent and skilled in managing complex projects (both strategic and tactical) using Agile and lean methodologies.
  • Able to explain complex GCP architecture decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and produce clear technical documentation (ADRs, runbooks)A world class technical communicator, able to command respect from peers and junior engineers alike.
  • Deep expertise and proven acumen in diagnosing distributed systems issues - network analysis, trace correlation, GCP-native debugging.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Practical knowledge of GCP architecture, network connectivity & regional deployment patterns, security controls (e.g. org policies, vpc service controls) and delivering environments in a fully automated method via infrastructure as code.
  • Extensive experience delivering secure service in public cloud, with a deep knowledge of security controls (both preventive and detective), cyber security tooling such as OPA, Wiz, code scanning technologies etc. 
  • Practical hands-on production experience delivering integrations with tools like GitLab, Terraform Enterprise, ServiceNow, Observability tools, Wiz etc.
  • Development skills across a range of development technologies and languages with the ability to develop Infrastructure as Code, integrations using languages such as python and creating APIs. 
  • Outstanding relationship & stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with the configuration of Apigee on GCP is preferred.
  • Experience with other CSPs such as AWS and Azure is required.
  • Experience delivering AI solutions on GCP or other hyperscalers is preferred

Purpose of the role

The Principal Engineer for GCP is an individual contributor role with deep hands-on expertise across all aspects of GCP including secure platform design, build and integration with management tooling. This is an exciting time to join the Public Cloud team, Barclays is early in our GCP adoption and you will play a lead role in defining the GCP design, build and strategy working closely with the product manager to set technical direction, architecture and define integrations in close collaboration with our Engineering teams. Additionally, you will provide technical leadership, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to foster a culture of excellence and innovation within the Cloud Platforms organisation.

Accountabilities

  • Be the recognised expert within GTIS Cloud Platforms and the firm for the GCP platform, with strong knowledge of at least one other public cloud hyperscaler.
  • Set the strategic direction and provide visionary leadership for the GCP product roadmap.
  • Drive a secure, resilient and scalable platform while providing a best-in-class engineering experience to our internal customers. 
  • Build strong partnerships to foster cross-organisation collaboration.
  • Develop, customise, and integrate secure patterns to allow the successful design and build of scalable multi-region platform design to support critical services.
  • Implement security and controls to meet necessary compliance and regulatory needs for protection of data and assets in the public cloud.
  • Drive platform reliability through chaos engineering, SRE, Observability and incident response excellence.
  • Build self-service platform capabilities reducing time-to-production for application teams.

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
