As part of the Finance team, you'll help shape Barclays' financial strategy through accounting, budgeting, financial forecasting, and analysis. Your expertise will support management, cash and debt management, and insurance, driving the financial health and success of the organisation.

As a member of the Technical Accounting Group (TAG) you will provide technical accounting guidance applicable to Barclays financial reporting. The Technical Accounting Group’s key responsibilities include partnering with Finance and Business colleagues in relation to the integrity of the application of IFRS and Barclays accounting policies, and engagement in accounting standard setting activity to identify and plan for future changes in accounting requirements.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

As a Technical Accounting Vice President, you will partner and collaborate with others in TAG and Finance to:

  • Provide accounting guidance on transactions and events and support management in making key judgments relevant to Barclays’ financial reporting under IFRS.
  • Identify the appropriate accounting for new products and complex transactions by obtaining a full understanding of the business rationale and transaction economics.
  • Update, maintain and develop internal accounting policies by converting complex accounting standards into relevant and usable accounting policies for Barclays.
  • Design and deliver technical accounting materials and trainings to Finance, Business and other colleagues in a way that is accessible and relevant to recipients.
  • Engage in industry forums to understand industry practice on interpretive or judgmental accounting policies and to connect on developments or changes in the industry.
  • Prepare and present technical accounting analyses and conclusions to internal stakeholders and external auditors.

The ideal candidate:

  • Demonstrates an interest in further developing a knowledge of accounting requirements under IFRS, and an ability to apply that knowledge to transactions with varying facts and terms. Technical accounting expertise will be gained and further developed in-role through the supportive and collaborative culture of Barclays Technical Accounting Group.
  • Is comfortable contributing to team discussions, including debates on the merits of alternative or possible accounting views for transactions or events.
  • Recognises the importance of supporting the integrity of Barclays financial reports.
  • Collaborates effectively to build relationships and knowledge.

Purpose of the role

To develop and analyse, the bank's financial and regulatory policies and interpretations, complying with applicable laws, internationally agreed standards, and regulations, to enable effective management of the bank’s financial risks.  

Accountabilities

  • Development and assessment of financial policies, standards and associated controls that govern the bank's statutory and regulatory reporting obligations, and analysis of financial data and industry trends to identify areas for policy improvement or revision.
  • Management of the implementation of financial and regulatory policies across the bank's departments and business units, and support to employees on the interpretation and application of policies.
  • Continuous review of evolving laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance affecting the bank's operations, and assessment of the impact of regulatory changes on the bank's business activities, financial performance, and risk profile.
  • Communication of financial and regulatory policies to relevant stakeholders in a clear and concise manner, and development and delivery of training programs on financial and regulatory policies to ensure employee understanding and adherence.
  • Management of communication with regulatory authorities to gain insights into upcoming regulatory changes and expectations and participate in regulatory consultations and provide feedback on proposed regulations.

  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem solving processes.
  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
