As a Barclays Legal Counsel - Mortgages Lawyer, you will work with existing members of the Barclays UK (BUK) Legal team to provide assistance and legal advice on all aspects of Barclays’ current and proposed product offerings in the BUK Secured Borrowing business, as well as to help businesses across the Barclays group in connection with secured regulated lending (mortgage) products. This is an opportunity to be involved in identifying and managing risk, and planning for change brought about by developing regulation.
Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, established in 1690, with a legacy of success, quality, and innovation. We offer careers that provide endless opportunity – helping millions of individuals and businesses thrive and creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted.
At Barclays, we offer a hybrid working experience that blends the positives of working alongside colleagues at our onsite locations, together with working from home. We have a structured approach where colleagues work at an onsite location on fixed, ‘anchor’, days of the week, for a minimum of two days a week or more, as set by the business area (or nearest equivalent if working part-time hours). Please discuss the working pattern requirements for the role you are applying for with the hiring manager. Please note that as we continue to embed our hybrid working environment, we remain in a test and learn phase, which means that working arrangements may be subject to change on reasonable notice to ensure we meet the needs of our business.
What will you be doing?
• Assisting the Treasury team at Barclays in relation to the securitisation of regulated mortgage products
• Advising on the implementation of the FCA’s Consumer Duty and the implementation of the Mortgage Charter
• Advising on BUK Secured Borrowing’s sustainability strategy (including financing the transition for our customer base)
• Providing consistently excellent, pragmatic and commercial legal advice with appropriate supervision and guidance from line manager or team member
• Adhering consistently to risk and control policies including communicating, advising on, and escalating legal and regulatory risks, and assisting with implementing solutions
• Advising on the FCAs proposed changes to the Mortgage Conduct of Business Rules designed to provide tailored assistance for customers in financial difficulty
What we’re looking for:
• Solicitor or barrister qualified in the UK or equivalent commonwealth jurisdiction
• Experience of working in a law firm and/or in-house with a financial services organisation
• Technical expertise and competence in secured lending regulation (mortgages) and/or banking and regulated products more broadly, such as secured debt, etc
Skills that will help you in the role:
• Regulatory technical expertise in wider financial services (for example, Consumer Protection, Consumer Credit, Data Protection)
• Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills
• Experience of contributing to the creation of policies and controls
